Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Reality

workplace burnout

Your thoughts are your reality.

The more you think about something, the more likely it will come true. The more you focus on something, the more you focus on it. Duh, Jessica. What I mean by that is the more you focus on it, the more you’ll continue to focus on it, and stay stagnant. So the more you think about and focus on the negative things (why didn’t I close the deal, why can’t I lead this team better, why not me), the more you’ll continue to focus on them, and the less likely you’ll take action.

Focusing on negative thoughts will paralyze you. You’ll continue to think about these things, and then you’ll buy into them and believe them. Then what you believe becomes what you act upon.

When you think you can’t close deals or “nobody” is buying from you and you focus on this, you’ll do things that keep people from buying from you. You may be saying, “No, Jessica, I don’t do that.”

Let me clarify. These aren’t conscious things you do. You aren’t consciously trying to sabotage yourself. They are subconscious. You do them without realizing they are self-sabotaging. You think something. Then you think it again. Then you believe it. Then you act on that belief (or do nothing which is still an action), and that becomes your reality, and six months later you wonder why nothing has changed.

When you believe you’re not that great of a sales person, what you’re really telling yourself is you’re a bad sales person. And since you’ve convinced yourself of this, you will make excuses why you can’t pick up the phone to follow up with someone or why you can’t go to an event to meet new prospects. In fact, you’ll make excuses for anything that has the possibility of looking or feeling like something to do with sales. Because doing those things may make you feel uncomfortable, and instead of being uneasy about them, you put it off or talk yourself out of it. After all, you already have yourself convinced you’re a bad sales person and not selling things. So see, you’re right, you’re a bad sales person.

Do you see how that works?

You think and believe things that aren’t true (you’re not a great sales person). Then you prove yourself right by not doing anything that would prove the opposite (following up or meeting new people, because they may actually buy from you and that would disprove you’re not a great sales person). And then you wonder why you’re not making more money.

Stop believing the lies. Stop thinking the negative thoughts. Stop buying into what other people say. Go with what you know in your heart to be true. You’re a great sales person. People like you and want to buy from you. And if they don’t, it’s not about their not liking you. It’s about them (bad timing, they aren’t in the market)

If you want to change your reality, you must first change your thoughts. Pay attention to what thoughts you have. How can you use your negative thoughts to motivate you to take positive action?

Changing your thoughts is only a part of it. When you change your thoughts, you become what you believe about yourself to be true. That will change your actions, and your actions change your reality. Taking positive action is the only way your reality will change.

What will you do today to change your thinking?
